Q) What hair color and cut do you think would look good on me?
I am 20, tan, green eyes, dark brown hair (dyed) I wanna try something lighter bc the dark hair keeps fading from being out at the beach since I am not naturally that dark haired. Oh yeah, my hair is shoulder length and thin. Oh yeah, I am a guy:o)
Professional Hair Care Answer - Its hard to pick out someone else's hair color and cut, however you could try a different hair color. If you chose a medium to light brown color, the top will still be lighter if you continue to go out into the sun but will blend better with your own natural hair color since it's lighter anyway.
To achieve a light - med. brown color in dark hair, you'll need 30 or 40 volume peroxide and a #6 light brown. That should give you a medium brown color. If you want it lighter than that, use a #7 dark blond color and/or a 40 volume peroxide to get maximum lift. Peroxides come in 20, 30, or 40 volume. The higher the volume, the more 'lift' you get. Since I don't know your base color, its hard to tell you which one to choose to get the effect. I suppose you are about a #3 which is a dark brown color.
If you have lighter hair than that, just use a #8 medium blonde and a 20 volume peroxide. Use products like L'Oreal Preference Hair Color for maximum staying power.
When you color your hair from dark to light, it's better to heir on the side of caution and go a bit darker at first, than try to go too light quickly. You can end up with some real bad hair disasters if you aren't careful. Its much safer to go up incrementally!
If you DO NOT want RED in your hair, use an ASH color however, be warned that ash colors can come out a bit drab. I would suggest using a beige color because it only adds a bit of red. If you want some red colors, then use a golden color.
You could also make things simpler and opt for highlights instead of an overall color. The contrast would look great if you use a medium to light brown color. I don't know if you can do this yourself?
You could achieve this very easily either using a cap and pulling your own hair through it, or applying it one small section at a time. (Video Technique) That way the highlights you have on top would blend into the rest of the hair. Throughout the summer the sun will pick up on the added highlights and it'll look very natural.
You could get your hair highlighted in a salon if this is too hard for you to try by yourself. I would suggest highlighting in the same color as you have on top.
You can buy the highlights in the box but you never know what color you'll really get! Your best bet would be to go to a salon or color your own hair. Because you have thin hair, either way it won't be that costly or time consuming.
Without seeing you its hard to suggest a haircut. I do suggest you go into a Salon and ask for get a hair consultation. These should be free for a hair color and cut and/or you could look through some of the hair design books they have there and get some good ideas. Or, you can always use a free virtual hairstyle tool to help you. You should check out the free mens hairstyles demo tool, and/or the hair color demo tool.
