Growing Hair Out After Using Hair Color

by Kathy
(Louisville, KY)

Went to the salon almost a year ago to get the grays covered. I thought I was getting something that would wash out after so many shampoos because I'm older and couldn't see myself doing this forever.

I think I got a permanent hair color. I have used semi-permanent colors but have never felt confident that they actually fade out enough. So, I just stopped all together. Now, about 4 inches has grown out and there is a marked different (obviously) from my color and the one given to me. I am naturally a dark ASH brown but the salon guy - even though I told him not to - gave me something that looks reddish. Is there something I can do to ease the transition for getting my own color back without having the root line or cutting all my hair? Thanks!

One day, I will be going through this myself! Unfortunately, unless you are willing to use a semi permanent color to hide your roots, there's not a lot you can do. Its an awkward process and its best done with gritted teeth and determination when you have a line of demarcation that stands out like a sore thumb!

When you get your hair done at a salon, be sure that your stylist knows exactly what you want. This is so incredibly important as you know.

There is a difference between semi permanent colors and demi permanent colors, so if you try out another color, be sure to check the label and know what you're buying.

Semi permanent colors last approximately 30 days only.

Demi permanent colors can act more like a permanent color the more you use them.

However, it also depends on your hair's porosity. The drier your hair is, the more it's going to absorb any color. Therefore, be sure to condition your hair well before you color your hair.

All hair color should also be applied to slightly dirty hair because the oils from your scalp help correct hair porosity before color application.

Semi-Permanent?
by: Anonymous

So, are you saying if I use semi-permanent hair dye, eventually my own color will come through with time and I won't have to cut it out (other than the permanent stuff)?
