The whole fruit, including the seeds, leaves, and skin can be used for medicinal purposes. Dark colored grapes (red, purple, black) are a bit better for you than white or green varieties but only because they contain higher concentrations of flavonoids. However, with the vast invasion of GMO foods, you will need to make sure the grapes you buy are organic. Furthermore, any product you purchase made from any part of the grape plant should also be non-GMO!

Grape seeds can be harvested to make either extract or oil and both contain concentrated amounts of phytonutrients - known as oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC’s). If you buy the oil, make sure it's expeller pressed!

When you get enough flavonoids in your diet, it can help lower bad (LDL) cholesterol and blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. This may help reduce the risk of heart problems in the future. Flavonoids can also help reduce varicose veins and even hemorrhoids.

Grape Seeds Benefits for Eyes

Your eye health can be improved by taking grape seed extract supplements. It can be used to prevent macular degeneration, eye strain, and cataracts. In fact, taking 300 milligrams of grape seed extract daily can reduce eye strain in as little as 60 days. This is fantastic news for anyone who works long hours at a computer.

Grape Seeds Benefits for Skin

All antioxidants help improve the health of your skin but grape seeds benefits are in a class of their own. Because it contains one of the richest sources of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC's), it’s one of the most powerful antioxidants for your skin that’s available over the counter.

Many times, wrinkles and sagging skin can be caused by harmful free radical activity. Concentrated flavonoids help strengthen and protect cell membranes from oxidative damage caused by free radicals, which helps improve the appearance of your skin and reverse the aging process.

It also promotes skin enzyme activity by repairing connective tissue, which can help your skin feel firmer and look younger. Grape seeds also assist in wound healing by regenerating blood vessels and removing bacteria.

In a study performed by the Dermatology, University of California in 2011, scientists compared various vitamins in a group of 830 people. Those taking grape seed extract, experienced a 74 percent reduction in squamous cell skin cancer. GSE works as a Cox inhibitor, which helps prevent the spread of cancer throughout the body.

The discovery is important because GSE may become a wonderful alternative to using conventional types of sunscreens, which have numerous and potentially harmful chemical compounds. Sunscreens also block OUT the absorption of vitamin D absorption, which is not exactly what you want.

Grape Seeds Benefits for Immunity

Grape seeds benefits for immunity are impressive. The properties they contain can bode well for anyone suffering from a lowered immunity and even allergies. Grape seeds can help fight viruses and carcinogens. They also act as a natural antihistamine, which helps reduce the allergic response by reducing histamine production.

Grape Seeds Benefits for the Brain

Grape seeds are a significant natural source of phenolic compounds, which are known to strengthen the structural integrity of brain cells and their networks.

GSE is also one of the few antioxidants that can penetrate the blood-brain barrier, which may help protect nerve and brain tissue. Furthermore, it has been shown to stimulate the production of new brain cells, which could help give older folks longer lasting cognitive power. Additionally, GSE can help improve existing brain cell connections in the hippocampus; the memory control center of the brain.

Grape seed extract has also been shown to help regulate neurotransmitters in the brain and inhibit the breakdown of dopamine and norepinephrine, which may help treat conditions such as ADD and ADHD.

Grape Seeds Benefits for Colorectal Cancer

GSE may be a powerful weapon against colorectal cancer because it halts the growth and survival rate of colorectal cancer cells but leaves healthy cells completely alone. Scientists believe that GSE targets cancer cells by causing oxidative damage to them. If they can’t get oxygen, they can’t replicate and thrive. GSE causes what’s known as apoptosis, the death of cancerous cells.

Moreover, the more advanced the stages of colorectal cancer, the more GSE gets busy suppressing and killing off numerous types of cancer-mutated cells, while chemotherapy only targets specific mutations. The more mutations a cancer presents, the more effectively GSE can treat them.

Grape Seeds Benefits for Prostate Cancer

There have been numerous studies done on the effects of GSE for prostate cancer. The Vitamin And Lifestyle study (VITAL Cohort study) followed over 30,000 men for 10 years. They found that a fairly high dose of grape seed extract lowered the risk of prostate cancer in men by 62 percent! Even those taking a lower dosage reported lowered incident of prostate cancer by 41 percent.

Grape Seeds Benefits for Lukemia

More recently, GSE has been shown to target Lukemia cells by turning on a protein known as JNK, which regulates cancer cell destruction.

The University of Kentucky conducted clinical studies into the anti-cancer properties of grape seed extract. They found that GSE triggered the death of 76 percent of all types of leukemia cells exposed to the extract in the experiment.

Grape Seed Oil

Grape seed oil is made by cold pressing grape seeds leftover from wine making. Grape seed oil has 120 calories per Tablespoon, 3.9 grams of vitamin E, 1.8 grams of saturated fat, and 9.7 grams of unsaturated fats. Any oil made from by-products of plant sources are considered to be heart healthy because they’re cholesterol free.

Grape seed oil has a higher smoke point (of around 420 Fahrenheit) than thicker oils, so it can be used for deep frying and sautéing meats and veggies.

Grape seed oil is extremely versatile and can be used in a variety of different ways. It has a very mild grape flavor and scent but is considered to be neutral in taste. This means it is suitable for cooking foods with delicate flavors that could potentially be disguised by using stronger tasting oils like olive oil. It can be used for baking and whenever a recipe calls for vegetable oil.

Since grape seed oil and grape seed extract are made from grape seeds, you may expect to get very similar health benefits from using both.

Does the location that grapes are grown affect the quality of extracts and oils?

Where grapes are grown is very important to the amount of nutrients contained in the grapes. Both temperature and humidity can affect the antioxidant content in grapes. Wine grapes typically have more antioxidant power than other grapes.

Which Type of Grapes have More Antioxidant Power?

Red wine grapes are relatively higher in antioxidant content than white wine grapes because red wine is fermented in the seeds and more antioxidants leach from the seeds into the wine. The potency of the seeds depends on a high processing speed, which keeps them from becoming fermented.

The only way to start getting grape seeds benefits is by supplementing your diet with the extract or using the oil in food preparation or cooking. I have used the oil in cooking and it's fantastic. It takes a little time to get used to the flavor but like anything else, the more you use it, the more you'll favor it!
