Glycolic acid products are used to slough dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, which helps renew the skin. They are classified as Alpha Hydroxy Acids. (fruity acids) Anyone who wants fresher and healthier looking skin can benefit from their use. Glycolic peels stimulate cell turnover, reduce and diminish fine lines and wrinkles, reduce free radical damage, erase skin imperfections caused by the environment, reduce the size of pores, and assist in jump starting the skins natural production of collagen and elastin.
Glycolic acids are recommended for all skin types, EXCEPT for those who have sensitive skin! The results of using one are firmer, more resilient skin. You can administer treatments at home with available OTC (over the counter) products OR pay for treatments in a Dermatologist’s office. In our modern age, the OTC’s that are now available are the same percentage peels as those that are administered by a doctor.
OTC Glycolic products give your complexion a young dewey look, that you used to only be able to get at the Dermatologist's office. Continued use can make the biological clock reverse!
I recently tried Loreal Glycolic Mini Peel Kit. The results were amazingly awesome! You really get a lot of bang for your buck! There are other glycolic peels on the market, so be sure to shop around for the best price. The added benefit is that skin irritation is minimal for home use.
When you apply acid treatments, you may experience some of the same kinds of skin reactions as you do using AHA lotions like Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion, which totally work great too!
These include temporary skin irritation and ‘tingling’ and may include some redness. Your skin will also most likely peel a little bit after repeated use. It's usually no big deal though. Skin sloughing renews your skin from the inside out. Your skin will look plumper, be much softer, and fine lines and wrinkles will diminish. Please read and follow the directions for use by the manufacturer!
Over time you can expect symptoms to gradually disappear as the skin adjusts to the treatments. Results vary according to skin type and from person to person.
With continued use of glycolic acid treatments you will begin to see subtle improvements in the texture and tone of your skin in about 4 weeks. You will notice a smoother, brighter, and more youthful appearance.
Most glycolic products are not as strong as glycolic peels but are stronger than alpha hydroxy products. You can find glycolic peels up to around 50%, or maybe stronger. You can also find lactic acid peels, (made from the lactic acid found in milk), in formula's up to 70%.
These products work by removing the dead skin cells from the surface of the skin and promote the regeneration of collagen and elastin in your skin.
When you use glycolic acid products, you must be sure to also use a sunblock if you don’t want to re-damage your skin. All AHA's thin the skin slightly.
Because of this your skin will be more venerable to the harsh effects of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Sunblocks are a must have if you use AHA’s.
For most people, apply peels in the winter months, when you know skin exposure to the sun will be at a minimum. If you use them during summer months, you must plan to stay out of the direct sun for at least 2 weeks. That gives you one week to peel and one week for skin recovery. Even then, you must use extreme caution in getting sun exposure. You don't want to undo the good results you've already gotten on the skin you just peeled. Plan to wear a hat at all times and to wear sunblock every day.
Glycolic acid peels are a marvel. They can really help enhance and improve the skin’s appearance over time. Try one today!
