Get rid of orange hues

by Ashley
(Chapel Hill, NC)

I'm naturally somewhere between a medium and light brown - and when i make the repeated mistake of box coloring my hair, I pull brass and red. Recently, I used a box permanent dye - dark brown, and ended up with a dark brassy color. I decided to get it done professionally - I went in, asked to be given a full highlight. What I wanted was a dirty blonde high and low lights or to just be a nice Jennifer Aniston blonde. Currently, I still have lots of red/orange hues - I'm wondering, what would get me to the blonde/dirty blonde I'd like? Should I keep highlighting or go with a blonde dye? I've attached pictures of my hair now.

Thank you in advance! (:

Well, you could go both ways.

More highlights would eventually (and safely) help lighten your hair more. (Jen Aniston has dirty blonde hair naturally.)

Or, you could try lightening your hair with an ash color. Ash colors help negate red colors.

It'd be best if you try going lighter in steps if you use color. Try a light ash brown or a dark ash blonde color first, then go up in small increments (sticking to ash colors), until you achieve the blonde color you want.

For example, if you try a dark ash blonde and your hair isn't light enough, try a medium ash blonde next, then a light ash blonde, etc.

Do realize that if you color your hair yourself, then you'll need to do hair color strand tests first, just to ensure that color bases don't get mixed. If they do, your hair could end up an unappealing, strange color.

Also, your highlights will continue to get lighter as you continue to lighten your hair.

I was very excited to see that you are from Chapel Hill Ashley! Franklin Street was my old stomping grounds! My dad was a college professor at UNC and taught and ran the Free Dental Clinic for years. We lived however, in Durham NC in a Duke neighborhood!

Boo Duke!
