Frayed Hair

In the last year my hair has begun to fray in spots. I do not use harsh chemicals or excessive heat on it. I have naturally fine, soft hair and now, it's so coarse looks like burnt hair or actually like horse hair. I have cut it and conditioned it constantly. I've even stopped using heat to dry it. Now the problem areas are spreading. My stylist has never seen anything like it. Has anyone ever had this problem?

That really sounds weird as all get out sweetheart. Two things that came to mind were your stress levels/hormones and/or the water in your home. Have you recently been under a lot of stress, or moved into a new home/changed water sources? I would also be interested to know your age. If you're in your late teens, early twenties, your hormones are far more likely to affect your hair. Pregnancy also affects your hair!

Also, you said you condition it constantly. I would be interested to know what type of conditioners you're using. If you use protein conditioners without moisture, too much protein can dry out your hair and cause this type of problem. I would check the product ingredients you're using and switch to another brand. A good brand to try is Henna N Placenta with olive oil. Its cheap and provides protein with moisture. Your hair might benefit from applying leave in conditioners to your hair, especially on the problem areas.

Also be sure the shampoos and conditioners you're using don't have sulfites/sulfates in them. These ingredients can also cause this type of problem over time. Try organic hair products instead, like Aveda.

You might also try smoothing shampoos and smoothing conditioners. These help to lay down the hair cuticle and make it look and feel silkier.

To help your hair growth, take Super Biotin every day for a while and see if this B vitamin helps any.
