5 Foundation Makeup Tips from Celebrity Makeup Artists
There’s truly an art to foundation makeup application. It should never act as a mask. Instead, it should act like a second skin, according to top celebrity makeup artists.
Cakey makeup is a fashion faux pas; a mistake that many women continue to repeat. When it comes to foundation, too little is far better than too much!
If you want your foundation to look impeccable, there are several things you need to keep in mind, according to celebrity makeup artist Troy Surratt, who has worked with top names like JLo, Mariah Carey, Lea Michele, and Emma Stone. Imperfection is not an option for these leading ladies! In order to get your makeup right, you’ve got to apply your foundation perfectly.
5 Foundation Makeup Tips from Celebrity Makeup Artists
Makeup artist Melani Inglessis highly recommends using iced rosewater prior to makeup application. Why? It helps blend foundation perfectly to match your skin tone by shrinking and tightening large pores and refreshing the epidermis. She also suggests using a damp makeup sponge to apply iced rosewater and to apply foundation makeup.
Your fingertips can only do so much when applying foundation. You’re much better off using makeup tools that are designed to give a flawless look. According to Pati Dubroff, celebrity makeup artist for Miley Cyrus and Kate Bosworth, use a combination of a makeup sponge PLUS a foundation brush. According to Dubroff, it’s the only way to get your foundation to look like ‘real skin’.
She suggests using Shiseido’s Perfect Foundation Brush; the best of it’s kind in the beauty industry. She also suggests dabbing foundation a few times with your brush, then finishing the look with a light pass of a damp sponge.
Spraying a floral mist over the makeup sponge gives a luxurious effect to makeup. Pati Dubroff prefers using Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir to help the skin look radiant and refreshed.
Tom Pecheux, (popular for his lymphatic facial massage on models prior to a fashion show), claims that his technique helps models look super rejuvenated on the runway.
Pecheux uses a special blend of oils PLUS moisturizers on the skin before he applies his foundation. He also suggests using a light exfoliant and resurfacing mask to help clear unwanted skin debris and retain a polished glow.
(He prefers Eminence Organics’ Strawberry and Rhubarb Dermafoliant and Tata Harper Resurfacing Mask)
After polishing the skin, Pecheux uses a few drops of his unique blend of facial oils and massages it into the skin, followed by an oil free moisturizing gel like NARS Voila! The oils are what keep the skin plump and radiant and Pecheux feels that a thicker skincare treatment helps keep the skin from losing makeup.
Pati Dubroff says that "primers are golden to help reduce the need for foundation." She feels that the goal of foundation is to look flawless naturally, so it’s ideal to use a minimal amount. Makeup primer should give your face illumination. The new Dior Glow Maximizer Light Boosting Primer is a real game changer that can even be used to conceal dark under eye circles, according to Melani Inglessis.
If your complexion is on the dry side, Melani likes using a hydrating product such as Sunday Riley’s Effortless Tinted Primer.
For oily skin, she prefers using a mattifying primer like L’Oreal Miracle Blur, capable of removing oils and concealing large pores.
It's clear that your foundation makeup only looks as good as the effort you put into it. Taking a few extra steps and a little extra time can truly make all the difference!
