Finding Joy in your Life Can Reduce Chances of Illness

Finding joy in your life is hard to do when you're feeling down on your luck, but it’s imperative if you want to ward off disease and illness. Ongoing frustrations can be debilitating so you must take steps to divert it as best as you can.

If you keep waking up with the same sad feelings everyday, something needs to change. You've gotta be brave enough to break the vicious cycle or things will only get worse.

Joy is defined as: the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation by dictionary.com. Its not something you can buy, nor demand. It is also not normally something you can attain by chance. You have to actively search for it to create it.

Happiness may seem like a simple concept but it is extraordinarily important to both your mental health and your physical health. How you perceive the world is a direct reflection of what you’re feeling deep inside. When you lose faith, complete devastation takes over and nothing excites you anymore. That's a bad place to be because it can certainly take a toll on your health.

However, if you looked at the history of the world, you would find that struggle is nothing new. In fact, entire nations have been built by it. Many countries exist today only because their people were able to make it through tough times. If they can do it, so can you!

Here are some different ways of finding joy in your life, so you can cheer up and feel grateful, if only for a few minutes at a time. You will also find that joy promotes wellness and reduces your chances of getting sick or suffering from disease.

Simple Ways of Finding Joy in your Life

  • Do one thing everyday that helps counteract the negativity in your life. It can be a simple thing but it should be done daily if you want to keep finding joy. For me, it’s feeding the birds.

    My bird feeder is located just outside my kitchen window and I take great pleasure in making sure that my songbirds have plenty of food to eat. I don’t mind paying extra money for bird feed because I get so much back in return. Every time I walk into the kitchen, there are sure to be birds of all different species, sizes, ages, and colors competing for food or laying in wait. They're awfully cute and occasionally, rocky raccoon shows up!

    Even though their feeding patters seem totally chaotic at times, there’s still a natural order about things. In a tumultuous world, finding order can be refreshing! Its amazing how birds instinctively know when it’s their turn to eat and are reminded by others when its not.

    When you behold something beautiful, it changes you forever by leaving imprints on your spirit. Feeding the birds is my way of finding joy everyday. Birds are just so cool! Can you find one thing too, that makes you feel happy inside?

  • Be careful with your words. Once you release them, you can never take them back! What you say can change someone's world, for good or for bad. When you start your day with negative feelings, words, and thoughts, you are setting yourself up for more of the bad stuff. Remember, there are many ways to convey your thoughts. Think of the good things you can do with the words you say. Instead of saying ‘I hate my life cause nothing's ever good’, try saying ‘My life is challenging but I have the wear-with-all to rise to the occasion’ What you say to yourself matters! Use words wisely to keep finding joy in your life.

  • To find out what makes people happy, Ally Bank did a survey of over one thousand people in 2013. Some interesting things came into light. You might think that making money made people happy but that's not how the survey played out. Its not making money that keeps most people happy, it's saving money! Eighty four percent of the people surveyed said that accumulating money for retirement led them to an overall sense of well-being.

  • Take a look at the world around you. No matter how bad things are for you at the present, there will always be someone who has it worse than you do! Think about the drought and starvation that happened in Somalia a few years ago.

    Now, take a good look at your own circumstances again. You should be able to find a few things in your life that are going well! If you’re not finding joy, then maybe you’re looking in all the wrong places!

  • You may wish for things to be different but they won't change unless you do! Time is a valuable commodity. Don't waste time away wishing. Do something, even if it seems stupid and remember that life can change on a dime!

  • When the world gives you lemons, make lemonade! Everyone goes through tough times in their lives when bad things seem to compound everyday. So if the world seems unforgiving and scary, you must take the upper hand and make your own happiness. Turn a bad situation into a good learning experience. All clouds have a silver lining! Maybe you can't see anything good right now but that doesn't mean that tomorrow, you won't!

    To give you an example, two years ago I lost my most favorite cat in the whole wide world. When I lost George, I couldn’t eat, sleep, or concentrate. I cried everyday for a solid month and was getting more and more depressed as the days past. I knew that I had to do something fast to NOT slip into a deep depression.

    Soon after, I marched myself down to the Humane Society and found a kitten to love. This was one of the hardest things I’ve ever made myself do! I knew no cat could ever replace my George, not in a million years! However I knew that I would be giving a home to a kitten in need and that a new kitten would help heal my broken heart. Mr. Doodle is no George cat but he’s a fine young lass that makes me smile! That’s what finding joy does. It makes you feel good deep down inside and helps heal what ails you.

  • "Get busy living or get busy dying." Ever heard that expression? There's good common sense why it rings true. In life, you need to fill your bucket with things that make you feel worthwhile. If your bucket is empty, you may feel worthless. Keep filling your bucket with anything constructive that fuels your self-worth. Do enough of them and your bucket will be overflowing.

  • Realize that no man or woman is an island. The human race as a whole, could not have survived if it wasn't for other people. We all need someone to lean on or go through life with. Intimacy is something you experience with others. (Or even pets!)

  • Joy is all around you just waiting for you to open your eyes and take it in! You don't have to look far to find it either. Remember that there's no place like home. Make your home your castle. Invest in fixing up the place if you need to. Find DIY projects that don't cost a lot to do and get busy doing them.

  • Get dressed every day, even if you don't have any place to go! Staying at home in your pajamas day after day will not make you feel better. While you're at it, do take a look at yourself in the mirror everyday and do the menial things (like brushing your teeth, plucking your eyebrows, or shaving) that keep your ego boosted. When you at least look halfway decent, you will feel better about things in general.

  • Separate the forest from the trees. Sometimes, finding joy is just a matter of adjusting your perspective a twitch. If you only see the forest (the bigger picture), you’re surely missing the trees. (all those unique little things that can bring joy). Focus more on the things in life that don't create chaos and you’ll feel happier inside!

    Your time on this earth is precious so make each day count for something! When bad feelings are knocking you down, finding joy is more important than ever! Daily struggles can be overwhelmingly negative IF you allow them to take over your life.
