Prevent Facial Wrinkling - Steps You Can Take Today!
There are many things that contribute to and cause facial wrinkling
. They are simply a sign of time passed and there is no disgrace in having them. No matter how much we dislike them, they are an inevitable part of aging.
Everyone remembers the first wrinkle they ever had too! The horror! Over time, we notice more and more, but life goes on and then one day you look in the mirror and wonder. What if I had done more to prevent them in the first place!
The good news is that it's NEVER too late to reverse the signs of time by controlling the way you treat your skin! There are many day to day things you can do to discourage facial wrinkling!
What Causes Facial Wrinkling?
Visible lines in your skin is a by-product of aging. With age, skin cells divide more slowly, and the inner layer of the skin, called the dermis, becomes thin. The network of elastin and collagen fibers which support the outer layer of the skin become loose and detached, causing depressions on the surface of the skin. Those depressions are called wrinkles.
The protein elastin allows the skin to stretch, and collagen fibers are the major structural proteins within the skin. With aging, skin also loses its ability to retain moisture and sebaceous glands (oil glands) become less efficient. The skin also reacts slowly in the healing process as you age. All of these things contribute to the development of facial wrinkling.
is the one of the number one causes of premature aging
. The more stress you have, the more facial contortions you make. Stress also releases all kinds of harmful chemicals in your body. The more you stress out, the more harmful chemicals are released into your bloodstream. The more harmful chemicals your body has to handle, the less its able to do it job repairing your skin.
Facial Muscle Contractions
Lines between the eyebrows (frown lines) and lines around the corners of the eyes (crows feet) develop largely because of small facial muscle contractions. These are done unconsciously without thinking as they are an autonomic response to stimuli around you. Smiling, frowning, squinting and other facial expressions cause wrinkles to become more prominent. Facial expressions coupled with gravity contribute to the formation of double chins
, baggy eyes
, and drooping eyelids.
Exposure to UVA and UVB rays can result in premature aging of skin. Premature aging of the skin is sometimes called photoaging. Dangerous ultraviolet rays that cause photoaging damage collagen fibers and cause an excessive production of abnormal elastin cells. When UV light damages any skin tissue, an enzyme called metalloproteinase is produced. This enzyme re-creates and re-forms collagen. During the process however, some healthy collagen fibers get damaged, which results in a disorganized formation of fibers called solar scars. Wrinkles develop when the rebuilding process recurs.
Alcohol and Smoking
Healthy, plump skin
continually regenerates itself... while old collagen breaks down and is expelled from the skin, new collagen is subsequently produced.
Research has found that alcohol consumption and smoking cigarettes
incite a marked reduction in the formation and production of new collagen. Depressions and fine lines develop when there is a lack of new collagen being produced. These bad habits also deplete the body of vital fluids causing dehydration. Skin can become dull and sallow if these products are consumed in large quantities.
These major contributors all add up over time. Unless you take proactive action against them, wrinkles will have no choice but to form on your skin.
How to Prevent Facial Wrinkling
Your skin has memory. If its folded in the same place over and over again, your skin will eventually form a more permanent crease, which is known as a wrinkle.
Some lines form because you express emotions such as happiness or sadness. However, the more you contort the skin on your face, (by pulling or tugging on the skin or grimacing), the more wrinkles you will have.
Be gentle to your skin and it will repay you by not having as much facial wrinkling!
If you sleep face down, you can cause more premature lines while you sleep. Instead, sleep on your side or your back if possible and use a satin pillowcase, which are cheap to buy but do such a great job!
Unprotected sun exposure is the #1 cause of premature facial wrinkling of the skin. Tanning beds and sunburns are major contributors. Even in naturally dark skinned people, sun damage causes 80 percent - 90 percent of the visible signs of aging.
The best way to protect yourself is to stay out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day. You can help reduce wrinkles if you stay out of the sun between 10am and 4pm. These are the worst, hottest times of the day where the sun can do the most damage. Opt to go into the sun before or after these hours. It will help undo any previous damage to your skin!
Wearing shades or sunglasses with UV ray protection is a must have. Squinting will form wrinkles very quickly. Also you can keep sunblock (if you use one) out of your eyes by applying a wax based product formulated for lips (like a chapstick) around the eye area. That way you still get protection and it won’t run into your eyes when you sweat.
Although facial aerobics have been touted in many beauty books for wrinkle prevention, the more you manipulate the muscles on the face, the more facial wrinkling you’ll cause. You may end up working the same muscles that caused wrinkles in the first place!
You can however, do facial exercises or facial massage! These are totally include in your skin care regimen and should be done regularly.

Aside from covering up in the sun, there are more and more materials available that have sun protection built right into them. You can buy bathing suits, umbrellas, shirts, and other clothing that offer both UVA and UVB protection. It sure beats putting chemicals on your skin!
Never start smoking is the best advice. However, if you smoke, you realize that smoking is really hard on your skin! If you want healthy and youthful skin, you’ll need to stop smoking.
Try the newer e-cigarettes (electronic smoking devices), which are designed to replace traditional tobacco cigarettes. However, you'll only be trading one bad habit for another. It's a real dilemma if you smoke!
Stress and worry cause you to frown regularly. Deep creases form when you keep your face in precarious positions for excessive lengths of time. Learn how to reduce stress by doing calming exercises or relaxing more often.
Using products that help plump the skin naturally helps prevent wrinkles. Products that contain hyaluronic acid help smooth your skin and can reduce the amount of facial wrinkling you get over time.
Anti aging skin products only do but so much. You must treat wrinkles from the inside out too! Taking your daily vitamins ensures that your body is getting the nutrients that it requires to properly function! Antioxidants help reverse damage done by the negative forces in your environment and stop free radical cell formation. Once I started taking a handful of vitamins everyday, my friends were awed! It took years off the visible signs of aging for me, and it can for you too!
You also need ample amounts of water throughout the day. Water helps keep your skin properly hydrated and plumped. It also helps boost the production of collagen and elastin, which are vital to your skin. Without ample water, your skin will form lines even more!
Facial wrinkling is a part of life but it can be controlled if the proper steps are taken early on. The sooner you start showing more attention to your skin, the fewer wrinkles you will notice over time.
