Extremely Thin Hair
by Marie

Hello, I'm a 17 year old girl and I've always had very long fine straight thin hair. Recently my hair has been getting thinner and thinner. I cut it because it was just too thin to be long.
The growth of my hair has not changed. It always grown very fast and still does but the hair that grows out is very thin as well. By now my hair is so thin you can see my scalp very clearly on top and its getting worse very fast. Its not falling out, just getting thinner and less. My whole family has very very thick curly hair, and never experienced their hair getting thinner.
Forgive my horrible explanation and poor English but I am really worried and I need to know what is happening. Thanks in advance. Marie

First, let me say how sorry I am that this is happening to you. At that age especially, hair is very important!
There are a few things that influence your hair. Your diet is very important. Be sure to eat
healthy foods as much of the time as possible. You need the
right vitamins to make sure your hair grows as it should.
High stress can also influence
hair growth. If you are in school and the demands on you are very great, then your
hair growth can suffer. Peer pressure is also another stressful factor.
Hormones are especially tricky at this age. Hormones fluctuate and that can lead to abnormal
hair growth.
Reducing stress and eating
healthy foods are things you have control over. Hormones can also be influenced by using different birth control methods. You may want to see your family doctor if you started taking them recently.
If you're not taking them, you may want to consider using them, with your parents permission of course. Birth control pills at your age can have a positive effect on hormone influxes. Many women use them for example, to help regulate their periods. In other words, just because you're taking them, doesn't mean you're being promiscuous.
