Extremely Dry Rebonded Hair

by Amy
(London, UK)

I used to have really tight curls that used to frizz out and go puffy. I couldn’t even get a brush through my hair without crying. Then I used hair straighteners but that made most of my hair fall out and my hair looked really dry and damaged.

Then I had my hair rebonded and its sort of straight. I’m having the roots rebonded again when it grows out.

I have crimps in my hair which I straighten with a flat iron but it doesn’t hold. I’m also worried because my hair is falling out and I’m only in my early teens! What products should I use please?

I use a bit of olive oil (apparently it makes hair healthier and stronger), normal shampoo and conditioner and I use flat irons but use heat protectant spray.

I like curly hair that doesn’t frizz. I have used many anti frizz products but they seemed to make it worse.

Nothing really works and I’m worried that all my hair will fall out!

I will be so grateful if you’d help.
Thanks xx

My first advice is to stop trying to make your hair straight. Your hair is naturally curly, and all the things you are doing to make it straight, are damaging your hair!

Rebonding involves very strong chemicals that change the molecular structure of your hair. Then you are using a flat iron on top of rebonded hair, which only causes more damage. It is no surprise to me that your hair is falling out. It will continue to fall out, as long as you keep abusing your hair.

You are also using shampoos and conditioners for normal hair. Your hair is not normal.

You can use straightening shampoos and straightening conditioners that will help lay down your hair cuticles, which helps keep your hair straight. You can also use smoothing creams which do not leave your hair oily.

You must also switch over to products for chemically treated hair.

You also need to do deep conditioning hair treatments every two weeks until your hair responds.

Moisture is the key. If you go back to your curly hair, then keep using moisturizing conditioners. They will help cut down on frizz a lot.

Olive oil is a great conditioning treatment but better yet, is coconut oil. Leave it on overnight (wrapped in a towel of use a hair cap) for best results and then shampoo and condition as normal the next day.
