Eliminate Brassy Hair Color

I started putting highlights in my hair which was a dark brown color and then used a toner of 9.1 ash voilet on it. I have been going lighter now for the 5th month but the problem is that every time I pull hair through the cap, different hair gets pulled through. (Some of the dark hair and some of the already lighter hair was left under the cap.)

I am at a stage now where I am yellow on top and and a lot of red-orange and yellow all in between. Don't know what to do next to get rid of all the brassy hair color. If I use just use an ash color, the yellow will go green. Can you please give me some advice?

Well, that's hard to say because you didn't tell me what you were using to lift and highlight your hair? If you were using the 'hightlights in a box kit', its no wonder you're getting strange results. Box colors suck.

If you've been using bleach to lift and lighten your hair, you didn't leave it on your hair long enough. Dark brown hair color has to go through 10 stages of decolorization before you get to light blonde. (Depending on how dark your hair really is...) Before you tone your hair, it has to be a very light blonde color for the toner to work well.

There is no way to get the same hair strands pulled through the cap again. That's why it's so important to get your hair the right color before you remove the cap!

(It would have also helped if you had added a picture of your hair so I can be very specific about advising you.)

When you pull dark hair through a cap, only apply bleach to the darkest areas first. It must have time to lift. After your dark hair color has had time to lift to almost the light blonde color stage, then apply the bleach to the brassy hair color so it can also lift to light blonde.

You might also try coloring your brassy hair in sections, just like you part off and divide your hair when you do root color. Apply a very light ash blonde color with 40 volume peroxide to the brassy hair color to get it to lift it to blonde. This will be tricky to do by yourself though, especially in the back. (You may be able to color your hair correctly if you have someone to help you.)

If you are worried your hair will turn green, do a simple test strand first to be sure. Choose a small section underneath your hair so it won't show. If your hair does turn green, then use a very light beige blonde or champagne color with 40 volume peroxide instead.

You might also think about going back to the drawing board and color your hair dark brown again all over, then start lifting it correctly. That might be a tough thing to do though for you. You will probably not be able to get a consistent color by yourself.

You may need to get your hair professionally colored to correct the difference in color first, and then start using bleach correctly.

If you'd like to know how to use bleach properly, you need to watch my video on bleaching your own hair.

You might also try a tone refiner for blonde hair. It might just be worth a try.
