Dying dark roots blonde

My hair is naturally a medium-dark brown. 3 or 4 years ago I went blonde and over the years I have changed to highlights-bleach-foils. I am now going traveling for a year and am hoping I can use box dye on my hair whilst away but am worrying the roots will go orange/or be a different color than the rest of my hair. I was wondering could you offer any advice as to what would be the best way to go about it? I would like to also stay away from bleach.

*********

There is no way to predict what types of colors you'll be able to find overseas. The chemical makeup of colors is about the same worldwide, but even small variations in chemical structure of a product, can make a huge difference. Hair colors in China for example, would not necessarily be exactly the same as the colors you'd find in the UK.

The best way to avoid orange hues, brassiness, or red colors, is to use ash colors, which a devoid of red colors altogether. Look for ash colors that have a green or blue base for the best results.

Do remember that the type of water you wash your hair with can also make a huge difference. If you are in a country with a lot of tannins in the local water, it will affect how well colors perform in your hair. Heavy tannins in the water can give colored hair an orange tint.

If you find you're having a problem with this while overseas, the best advice is to get professional help. A licensed hairdresser should be able to safely fix any color problems you might have overseas.
