Damaged Hair Ends from Foils

by Jane
(Windsor Ontario Canada)

My hair is thin and fine. Every time I go to my hair dresser for highlights, she uses foil which I'm grateful for but my ends are ruined.

Does she really need to seal in all the hair piece that she is highlighting or can she just highlight the root leaving the ends out so they are not constantly chemically treated over and over again?

I feel this is a lot more healthy for my hair. Am I correct?

You are absolutely correct in your not wanting your ends colored every time. She could leave them out and then use a toner on the ends if they needed color refreshing.

Principally speaking, you should only color untreated/uncolored hair when you apply highlights. Coloring previously colored hair is a big 'no no' and is called overlapping. It will cause hair to get thinner and thinner over time... plus it keeps lightening the color you do have and dries your hair out, especially the ends.

She could wrap the hair ends in the foil without coloring them or she could leave them out if they don't interfere with the foiling process.
