Q) Dear Carolyn, How can I curl hair overseas without rollers?
I am going overseas to see family and won't be able to use my hot rollers. Do you have any suggestions as far as product to help hold the curl and type of rollers that may work for me?
Hope you are well and I am sure you are keeping busy as always. Bless you for helping us cosmetically challenged out. All my best. Lisa
Professional Hair Care Tips - Lisa, I don't use a lot of holding products in my hair except wax and shine products but certainly have used a lot of them in the past! (I go more for the straight hairstyle now although I'm always complimented when I take the time to curl it:o)
I would use any gel that also say 'shine' or 'glide' or 'glaze' on it. These give you the best hold and the most shine and tangle free hair of all of them. I looked online for gel + shine products and found Pureology Styling Lotion with Shine and Herbal Essences Shimmer Gel Spray. Both mention shine and gel. When you buy shine and gel in one product, you'll actually save money and room in your suitcase. Of course, all gels add shine but the ones that post shine on the labels, also give you the most glide. I have a bottle of hair glaze (gel + shine product) that I've had for years and still have some left. It still works very well for me. (I think it's a Biolage product)
To curl hair overseas, here are a few ideas:
You can braid your hair when it's wet, then let it air dry overnight. (french braids work best if you can do one in your own hair). There are also velcro curlers on the market that work well but are not the best to sleep in....Use them on damp hair and allow to dry overnight. You can also use rag rolls but these take a long time to do. They are comfortable to sleep in though:o)
I think I would use foam rollers. You can pick up a cheap set at Sally's. Use setting cream like dippity do, gel, or mousse in damp hair before you roll it. These are also comfortable to sleep in. Just be sure to roll your hair long before you go to bed so they have time to dry completely. Of course, you can always set your hair after you've unrolled it with a flexible - firm hold. Don't use freeze hairsprays if you want your hair to have movement.
They also make shampoos that are said to help your hair be more curly. They should really help you curl hair overseas! I've never tried them cause I have lots of curls already. (I usually opt for straightening products:o) Wash'n Curl Curling Shampoo for Dry Hair and Aussie Catch the Wave Shampoo have 4 star reviews, while John Frieda Frizz Ease Curl Around Style Shampoo had a five star review.
They also do make instant heat hot rollers for overseas travel. From the reviews, they work well! (see product suggestions below) Best of luck and have a great time!
