Q) My daughters cradle cap is making her and me crazy!
(I was told it was called this but I don't know what that is.) My 6yr old daughter has had this problem with her scalp and want to know how to get rid of it. She has had it since she was a baby. It's dead patches of skin on her scalp and when we scratch it off, the hair comes off with it. She says it doesn't itch or irritate her. What is it? What causes it? How can we get rid of it?
Professional Hair Care Tips - I had this problem as a child too. You're right! Its called cradle cap. I outgrew it over time, but every now and again it shows up again. (Mainly the change of the fall to winter and winter to spring.)
Cradle cap is generally referred to as Seborrhea and it can be very hard to get a handle of. With Seborrhea, a lot of oils build up on the scalp as the sebaceous glands are overactive. The condition gives you greasy, oily, yellow flakes that are very noticeable and embarrassing. Overactive oil glands in the skin bode well for your daughter as it will help her look younger longer however, overactive oil glands on the scalp are a real problem.
Try Neutrogena T Gel shampoo. It works the best of all the shampoos I ever tried. Also Tea Tree Oil Shampoos or jojoba oil shampoos work well for some people. Of course, there are a lot of other products that work well too. (see recommendations below)
Many folks suggest that just regular shampooing helps the most. Others recommend oil applied to the scalp, left on overnight or for a period of time, like 15 minutes, then gently brushing or combing the flakes off.
As a licensed Cosmetologist for over 17 years, I do not recommend the application of extra oils on the scalp. Seborrhea is a condition that is caused by too much oil in the Sebaceous glands. If you apply more oil, you may make the condition worse. Also when you scrape the flakes off your scalp, you may penetrate the skin below and cause it to rupture and start bleeding. That only creates more of a mess to handle.
I don't know if you live near the ocean, but ocean water is really good at drying up excessive oils. You can make your own at home by combining 2 T table salt in one gallon of warm water. Shake it up and pour the mixture over her head and on her scalp once a week, but be sure to condition her hair ends afterwards, as whats good for her scalp, maybe drying to her hair.
Never, ever apply conditioners to her scalp though. Conditioners may make her condition worse, as they contain moisturizers. Her scalp is already overly moisturized with natural oils. Don't add fuel to the fire.
*I have also just learned, that cradle cap is caused because a deficiency in Biotin in your body. The easiest way to handle this condition, is to make sure your daughter takes biotin supplements! Try Super Biotin first, until the problem clears up, then switch over to regular biotin afterwards. However, you can't overdose on this B vitamin, since it's water soluble.
Since the problem sounds pretty bad, I would suggest that you try both measures initially.
