Covering Gray Hair

by Rene
(Northampton, MA)

I have moderate gray hairs in my shoulder length, layered dark brown wavy hair.

My hair is shinier and in better condition than it's ever been since switching to condition only treatments. I've removed all hair products with chemicals from my hair regimen.

I have acquired natural highlights from the sun which have added dimension to my now shiny hair. It's never looked this healthy in my adult life. It's no longer frizzy and shapeless.

As I've develop some gray in my mid-forties, I'm wondering how to proceed in order to enjoy and maintain the natural highlights of red and auburn in my hair and yet cover the gray. Low-lights? (the amount of gray in my hair is not yet noticeable enough to show up in photos yet).

Any insight would be great. Thanks, Rene

Yes, you could add low lights or highlights to your hair to help cover your gray hair. Demi permanent colors are also a good idea because they are only mild chemicals. I'd only use those however, if you want to color all of your hair.

The only problem with using highlights or low lights, is that as soon as you have new hair growth, your gray hair will start to show again.

Because you don't have that many gray's showing yet, this shouldn't be a big deal. However, as you grow older and more start popping up, you may want to consider switching to a permanent hair color. I've been using one for years to hide my gray's, and my hair is in fantastic condition, because I only color the root growth every month.
