How to Cover Highlights I Don't Want?

Q) How do I get rid of or cover highlights I don’t want?

Yesterday I went to get blonde highlights but they came out brown. I later learned that I had to tell the stylist I wanted them to use bleach it. Anyways is their anything I can use at home to get rid of them.

Professional Hair Care Tips - Personally, I would just buy a bottle of color the same color as your hair and color it back using the root to tip process. You may have some of the highlights show through as a bit lighter color but it won't be as drastic as it is now.

If you are unsure of your hair color, go into Sally's and look at the swatches there. Find the color that is the closest match to your hair and purchase that color. Then color over the highlights. Over time, your hair will grow out and your highlights will be a lot less noticeable.

This is the cheapest method unless you get your hairdresser to fix it for free! Your situation ticks me off because hairdressers are supposed to give everyone a hair consultation before they do a service. She should have questioned you more about what kind of highlights you wanted! If you have darker brown hair, she would have known that you have to use bleach to get blonde highlights! If she'd done the service right, you'd have probably tipped her more, and you'd have been happy with the results.

Another way to cover highlights is to apply a semi permanent hair color to your hair. These will last for about 30 days only though, but try this method if you're unsure of the exact color of your hair. My motto when it comes to color is: better safe than sorry!

PS If you still want blonde highlights and your hair is not too dark, (medium brown or lighter) you can achieve blonde in your hair by simply using a 9.1 or 10.1 color mixed with 40 Volume peroxide. These are ash colors and will give you the cleanest blonde color. Sometimes you have to use a toner on top of ash colors to get it the right color, but that is very easy to do!

If your hair is really dark though, the only way to achieve blonde hair color, is to bleach it. If you can follow directions, you can learn how to bleach your own hair at home and save a ton of money.
