How to Use Colored Mascara
There are many ways you can use the various colors of mascara available today. Try these tips to enhance your lashes and create the color blend you like.
Brush lashes before application. This helps eliminate loose lashes.
Apply a coat of clear mascara to lashes before using your colored mascara. This really helps to extend and separate lashes before you even start and really helps thicken sparse lashes. If you have really thick healthy lashes, skip this step.
If you don’t have clear mascara, use a firming eye gel. Simply apply a very small amount to your ring fingertips, and close your eyes. Apply to lashes in a downward motion and stroke your lashes. Allow to dry before you apply your colored mascara.
Apply black or brown mascara to your lashes first. Allow to dry. Then apply a colored mascara only to the tips of your lashes. This gives your lashes a pop of color, without overdoing it.
You can also create a different type of look by applying color mascara only to top or bottom lashes. Of course, you’ll want to apply black or brown mascara to the lashes you don’t add color to.
Apply mascara colors to both top and bottom lashes. This gives you flashy color.
For real drama, use different mascara colors on top and bottom lashes! For example, apply green mascara on top lashes and blue mascara on bottom lashes.
For best results, apply two coats of any mascara you use.
Always allow lashes to dry completely in between coats.
Different colors of mascara look great in natural lighting. It really shows up when you're in the sunlight, so be sure to wear them for any outdoor activity!
Try pink! Pink is one of the most versatile makeup colors. Every skin tone can wear pink makeup! Use brighter shades for dark skin tones, and lighter shades for fair skin tones.
Purple is still one of the hottest colors for the year. Purple mascara is snazzy!
Use black liners when using colored mascaras to add depth and a contrast of color to your eyes and enhance the mascara colors you choose. Line rims with black pencil liners or line top lashes with liquid black liners.
To make colored mascara stand out more, choose neutral tones of eyeshadow.
If you go out for a night on the town, use bold colors in all your makeup. You'll need more color in your makeup to show up in dark lighting.
If you're in a hurry and there's no time for makeup, apply mineral foundation, (which saves tons of time), one coat of colored mascara and a bright pink lipstick. You'll be out the door in no time and add flashes of color where you need them the most.
Choose mascara colors that look good with your skin tone. Also, look at the specs in the iris of your eyes for more clues about different colors you can wear successfully.
Make Your Own Colored Mascara
You can create your own color mascara using products you already have at home!
1) Apply black/brown mascara to your lashes.
2) While lashes are still damp/wet, dip a blunt eyeshadow brush (or shadow sponge) into any eyeshadow color and gently apply it on top of your lashes while looking down.
Make sure the colors you choose are brighter than your eye color. Your lashes are meant to accentuate your eyes! Have fun and feel free to experiment, whatever colors you choose. There are no right or wrong color combination's, if you feel comfortable wearing them!
More Colored Mascara Tips
Choose colors that complement your overall look. If you use a pink eye shadow look, wear green mascara.
Leave time in your routine for changes. If you’re a first time user of colored mascara, or you’re trying a different technique, you may end up not liking it. If you've allowed for extra time, you'll have time to change it.
Try glossy mascara for a change. Gloss makes your lashes shine and stand out!
Don't be a scairdy-cat to try new things. Most women don’t take advantage of colorful mascaras. That's pretty bogus considering that its a fast way to make your eyes pop! Variety is the spice of life. It would be pretty frigging boring if you didn't ever think outside the box!
Light colors open your eyes, dark colors recede your eyes.
If you have very light skin, avoid dark shades.
Be careful with glitter. It can settle into wrinkles and make them stand out.
Around the eyes is one of the first visible signs of aging. Whatever you do, don’t tug on the skin around your eyes. When you apply creams or lotions, most women get the direction wrong, which will create more wrinkles.
Start application in a circular motion. Begin under your outer eyes and move toward your inner eyes, then move up your nose to the upper eye from inside to outside to complete the circle.
Use your blow dryer to heat up eyelash curlers before you use them. Always TEST them first (for heat) before use.
