Color Over Hair Highlights

I want to color my hair dark auburn. I have bleached blonde highlights and medium blonde lowlights and my new growth is about an inch long. I'm afraid if I color my hair at home it will come out all different colors. Any advice?

*********

You didn't tell me what color the rest of your hair is? (the color of your new growth is _?)

If your hair has two different highlight/lowlight colors, then yes. A root to tip application of color would give you areas that would be lighter. Auburn colors tend to look pinkish after they are applied to lighter hair, so keep that in mind. Also auburn colors are stubborn to remove from your hair if you change your mind or don't like it.

You could try toning your hair first (apply to all of your hair) to get your hair one color. A demi permanent color might work nicely since they act more like permanent colors than semi permanent colors.

After you've evened out the color, then you can apply the color of your choice to your hair. However, take some preventative steps before you color.

Be sure your hair is well moisturized before you color it. If your hair is damaged, then you may need several deep conditioning treatments before you apply color. Damaged hair is very porous and tends to quickly absorb colors and the color may come out way too dark.

If you're uncertain about a color, always opt for the level above what you want. If the color is too light, you can always go back and color it darker. However, if you try a color and it's too dark, you will have to remove the color completely and start all over again.
