Clearing up Acne by Reducing Bromide Exposure

Clearing up acne may be difficult if you don’t figure out what’s causing the symptoms. Most people are at high risk for spontaneous breakouts, especially in the US, because bromides have become part of everyday life.

They lurk in cosmetics, hair products, flours, drinks and more, waiting to cause havoc on your body. Unfortunately, one of the most well known symptoms of bromism is severe acne. If your skin looks like a war zone, it’s something you should be concerned about.

Symptoms of Bromism

Bromide Acne

The one thing that distinguishes bromide acne from other types of acne is found in the presentation. It is described as ‘acne-like eruptions without coniform’. That simply means that pimples don’t ever form a head.

Acne may appear in mounds or clumps and may be located on the face, back or chest, around the hairline, or on the neck. More importantly, it is a sure sign that your body is trying to dump bromides via your skin.

What are Bromides?

Bromides are a member of the halide/halogen group and are a known endocrine/hormone disruptor. They are widely used as a processed food enhancer in many bakery items and pasta. Bromides are also found in some medications.

The biggest problem with bromides are that they block your body from absorbing and replenishing iodine. Sources include but are not limited to:

Sources of Bromides

  • Bakery goods and some flours: contain potassium bromate.
  • Food additives.
  • Hair color, permanent waves: as sodium bromate.
  • Some cosmetics: contain benzalkonium.
  • Pesticides: including methyl bromide and ethylene dibromide.
  • Toothpaste and mouthwash: as potassium bromate.
  • Bottled water: containing bromide ions.
  • Found in automobiles: bromine and chlorine found in car seats, armrests, door trim, shift knobs and other areas of the car.
  • Plastics: used in food containers and computers alike.
  • Citrus flavored drinks: like Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Sun Drop, Squirt, Fresca as brominated vegetable oil.

The trick to clearing up acne cases may lie in supplementing with iodine. Why iodine?

    The Iodine Connection

There is increasing evidence today that low iodine intake is directly related to numerous diseases, including cancer. Iodine is essential to every cell in your body and is needed by every organ and tissue.

Your body has iodine receptor sites all over your body that are commonly used by the thyroid gland to capture and utilize iodine. If bromides (or other halogens) occupy most of those receptors, it inhibits thyroid hormone production resulting in a low thyroid function, called hypothyroidism.

When receptor sites become saturated with bromine, there’s less iodine for your thyroid gland to utilize. Without sufficient amounts of iodine, the side effects of bromism take over your body.

Twenty percent of the iodine in the body is found in your skin, which actually prefers iodide. When the body is overwhelmed by the other halogens, toxins cannot pass through urine alone, so they are excreted through the skin as bromide acne.

That’s why it’s crucial that you limit your exposure if you’re serious about clearing up acne that’s caused by bromides.

    Halogen Atomic Weight

    Fluorine - 19
    Chlorine - 35.5
    Bromine - 80
    Iodine – 127

How the law of displacement works: Fluorine always displaces chlorine, bromine, and iodine. Chlorine displaces bromine, and iodine. Bromine displaces iodine. A reverse order is not possible.

In other words, a lower halogen weight always displaces a higher halogen weight. Weird how that works but true!

Since iodine can be easily displaced, clearing up acne is not going to be simple unless you take action.

Clearing up Acne Caused by Bromides

  • Buy organic produce when possible. Wash all produce with warm soapy water before consumption.

  • Read the ingredients of the baked good you buy. Look for gluten free or bromine free brands and avoid products that contain potassium bromate.

  • Store leftover foods in glass containers and avoid using plastics. Avoid eating or drinking from plastic containers as well.

  • If you rely on Mt. Dew to get you through your day, try switching over to flavored water or try Kool Aid again.

  • Use chemical free personal care products when you can. Anything that goes on your skin is absorbed into your skin!

  • When you’re closed up in a car, open windows on opposing sides to increase cross ventilation. Indoors, use fans to help circulate the air around you. Chemical exposure is real and they are found in much higher concentrations when you’re closed up with little circulation.

  • Take enough iodine, along with it’s companion nutrients (vitamin C, selenium, and *vitamin D) and use Kosher salt (Morton's pickling salt) on your food. Do *salt pushes in the morning to limit symptoms of bromism (like feet tingling) while you sleep.

*For unknown reasons, iodine lowers vitamin D in the body. Therefore, it’s fundamental that you increase either your sun exposure or slightly elevate vitamin D supplementation while you’re taking iodine.

*Salt pushing: Put 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt in your palm, lick it, and add a tablespoon (small handful) of warm water to your mouth. Aggressively swish it in and out of your teeth for a few minutes to help kill pathogens and reduce gum pockets. DO NOT salt push right before bed or you can get tingling in the hands or feet during the night! Do this for one week or longer, or until symptoms resolve.

You should also use Kosher salt on your foods or add 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt to plain water and drink daily. Keep drinking (lots of) water during the day to help flush bromides from your body. This will reduce symptoms of bromism that most people experience when supplementing with iodine.

  • Take borax detox baths and apply diluted borax as a facial wash used in conjunction with 70% rubbing alcohol a few times per week. This may help in clearing up acne faster.

  • SSKI (super saturated potassium iodide) can be effective if applied directly on bromide acne. It may sting at first but it’s very effective for some people. You can buy SSKI or Lugol's 5% Solution directly from Trapper at Curezone here: http://curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=1272098#i or from my estore here

  • Take NAC with an iodine supplement like Iodoral.

  • Pulse dosing (called pulsing) is recommended by many folks on Curezone.com. Whatever you do, start taking iodine slowly and build up your intake. It took time for your body to get overwhelmed by bromides. Clearing up acne isn't going to happen overnight and high doses of iodine won't help.

  • Some iodizers (people who take iodine regularly) find that zinc supplements help in clearing up acne.

    Symptoms of Bromism

  • Eye lid twitching
  • Foot twitching
  • Tingling in hands or feet
  • Not sweating
  • Dark thoughts or depression
  • Anxiety
  • High emotions
  • Mouth and tongue sores or cuts
  • Bromide acne
  • Skin cuts
  • Hair loss
  • Brain fog
  • Leg and hip ache (feels like arthritis)
  • Rash (bromaderma)
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Sinus pain
  • Cherry angiomas
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Odd swallowing sensation (reported in old medical literature as "swollen glottis")
  • Body odor
  • Smelly urine
  • Dry mouth
  • Ureteral spasm, frequent urination (often mistaken for UTI)
  • Constipation
  • Breast tenderness

  • If you have bromide acne and don't at least reduce bromide consumption, clearing up acne will be nearly impossible. That's why it's so important to be aware of the main sources of bromides in your diet or environment and start eliminating those sources first.
