Benefits of Dark Chocolate Facial Masks

The cocoa bean is the foundation of all chocolate. Before processing, it's a rich source of nutrients such as essential trace elements, minerals, and a wide variety of beneficial vitamins. It has four times as many antioxidants as green tea. Chocolate is also rich in sulfur, phenols, and flavonoids. Sulfur is a lesser known beauty secret that strengthens hair and nails and detoxifies your skin.

Chocolate Facial Mask Benefits

Chocolate facials are rich, exotic face packs that include raw cacao powder and other beneficial ingredients. The nutritional content of raw chocolate powder is astounding. According to lab analysis, raw cocoa has 955 ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) units per gram, which makes cocoa the highest known source of antioxidants in the world. There are over 25,200 antioxidants in one small spoonful of raw chocolate powder! Antioxidants are wonderful for your skin because they absorb free radicals, which cause cell and tissue damage and can lead to premature aging. Raw chocolate powder contains 367 percent more antioxidant power than cooked cocoa powder.

Studies have shown that chocolate is not only is not just good for you internally, but externally as well. Spa’s world wide offer chocolate facial treatments for all ages. All skin types can benefit from a delectable cocoa treatment!

Consumed regularly, cocoa reduces inflammation because it has so many key vitamins that serve your body. Cocoa is healthy for your heart as well! The blood circulating qualities are what make chocolate healthy for your skin!

To test it’s benefits, German researchers followed a group of women who were instructed to drink a half cup of enriched cocoa everyday for a three month period.

After testing was over, researchers found that the participants’ skin was better able to retain moisture, much smoother, and less scaly and red after exposure to UV light. The flavonoids found in chocolate help protect your skin and increase blood flow, which makes it look more refreshed and smooth. Just goes to prove that you don't have to give up your chocolate to have great looking skin!

You can make your own facial masks or purchase them. Making them is a bit messy, but is inexpensive too! You'll need to have lots of towels around when you apply them though.

Basic Chocolate Face Mask Recipe

(makes two or more masks)
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup of raw honey, bought from a local vendor
  • 2 tablespoons of heavy cream or sour cream (Plain milk is fine if its all you've got!)
  • 3 teaspoons of cornmeal, raw oatmeal flakes, or oatmeal powder

    * You can also add or substitute other ingredients like cream cheese, strawberries, or avocado into your facial mask. Just make sure to keep the ingredients natural and you can't go wrong!

    * Lower the measurements in this recipe to make one facial at a time.

Mix the ingredient until creamy. Apply to your face or any other body parts like your hands, feet, neck, or legs. Gently massage it into your skin. Leave it on for approximately 20 minutes and rinse with warm water.

Oatmeal helps deep clean your skin, exfoliating dead skin cell build up. Honey is a natural detoxifier and helps open pores and remove bacteria. Save leftover's in an airtight container in the fridge.
