Broken Hair Ends

by Ashley
(Florida)

What is it on the tips of your hair that look broken? How do you fix them and is a protein treatment good for hair?

What you are seeing is called split ends. They can occur at any age, at any time.

They are usually related to abusive treatment of hair, such as brushing too often, overuse of hot irons or blow drying, and not enough moisture.

You can try and condition your hair and see if that helps. However, once split ends start, they can keep splitting all the way up the hair shaft to the roots. Trimming your hair (cutting them off) is the only 100% effective way to stop the split.

Protein treatments may help repair split ends but your hair also needs moisture. Be sure to properly moisturize (condition) your hair regularly. Protein treatments work best when they also have a built in moisturizer. Too much protein can actually damage your hair and cause more breakage.

(Hask placenta is a great protein conditioner that's really inexpensive to buy at Sally's Beauty Supply store.)
