Brittle and Dry African American Hair
by Leah

My African American hair is very short and curly. It is longer on the top and bottom and is very short in the middle. It is very dry and brittle and breaks off every time I comb through it. This is a result from years of putting a relaxer in it and then flat ironing it and blow drying it.
How can I make it grow fast and longer? Also how could I style it because I really don't like having it curly because it makes me feel self conscious. (I have a square shaped face and a very long forehead.)

Well Leah, that's a hard one! First things first. You need prevent anymore hair from breaking off by
deep conditioning your hair regularly. You might even think about using a few
hair reconstructors to try and stop your hair from breaking off anymore.
Remember, African American hair needs tons of extra moisture anyway. Regular
Cholesterol treatments should be part of your hair care regimen and will help pull some of the curl out of your hair. Use them religiously! Another product that might help is
Hask Placenta products with Olive oil.
You can help your hair to grow out faster by taking simple
Super Biotin supplements. This B vitamin will not upset your tummy (like other B vitamins can) and are dirt cheap to buy. It really helps.
Styling your hair should be your last concern at this point. You can pull some of the longer curls that are on top over your long forehead to hide the square shape and that should help.
Your curls are naturally you! You will grow to love them again once your hair has some shape back in it again. Play with it and see if you can figure out new ways to pin your longer curls back and hide your short hair or plait some of the long hair on top, add some cool beads, and wear it so that they fall over the short hair below.
Your hair condition happened over a long period of years. Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes for it. It will take some time to undo the damage that's already been done to it.
The good news is that this won't last forever! As fast as time flies, your hair will be back to life before you know it. You just need to keep your eye on the goal at the end of the road!
