Q) What is the best haircut for 48 year old free spirit? My hair is straight/fine hair on top with wavy/frizzy toward the back of my head?
I'm at the point where I'm ready to cut it all off, but know better. My hair is straight as a rod about half-way down my head. Then, underneath all the straight hair, comes a wild mix of a wavy frizzy mix toward the back of my head. A wild bumpy cowlick at the back of my head makes a short haircut difficult and growing out a cut even worse.
Bobs are out because my hair is too thick. Layered looks last for a short time before they flip out or look frizzy. Every time I go for a cut I feel like I take a huge chance. At age 48 I really want something I can live with, ponytail or formal, without much fuss. I have tons of hair, with a chubby-oval face. If you have any hairstyle suggestions for me, I would Love it!
Professional Hair Care Answer - Predicting the best haircut for someone I've never seen is hard to do. However, I would just get someone to cut or shave the frizzy hair thats bothering you underneath. You might even try shaving it clean to your head below your occipital bone. That would make the hair on top lay down better and it'd be easier to style that way too and a whole lot less knotty! Of course, you won't be able to wear updo's if you try this, which might be a bummer.
You can also get a hairdresser to 'thin' your hair using thinning shears. Any licensed Cosmetologist should know how to do this. It is especially effective for people who have either 1) extremely thick or curly hair and 2) extremely thin hair. If you have thin hair, thinning it a bit actually creates more volume. Hard to believe but its true. The key however, is not to over-thin it.
I have two 'whirls' on the crown of my head, which are similar to cowlicks. You are right. If you cut your hair short around them, your hair will stand up! I also have rats and knots that develop underneath my hair too. If I leave them alone, they spiral. If they don't get brushed, they get knotty.
You might try smoothing cremes on the poofy part of your hair. They work great! Shine products also smooth the hair shaft but don't overuse these types of products or they might make your hair look oily instead.
Chubby faces look best by wearing styles that elongate your face, like longer bangs. Learn what styles look best for your facial shape. Since I haven't seen an actual picture of you, it would be hard to tell you whats the best haircut for you. You can always use this free virtual hairstyles demo tool to find a good cut or style. Soothing shampoos and conditioners, along with leave in conditioners will also help your hair be less frizzy. A good deep conditioning treatment every now and then also helps lay down the hair cuticle, which helps your hair look silky and sleek.
