Best Hair Straightening Products

by Erin Miller
(Vermilion, Alberta, Canada)

What are some great hair straightening products that can be applied to wet hair? More specifically, I am looking for a product that will relax the hair so it is less frizzy and less curly so I can just straighten it once in the morning.

I have frizzy, curly/wavy red hair and I prefer it straight, but I do not prefer the process. Blow dry hair and iron hair at night, then iron hair again in morning.

I know there are products out there (That are NOT sticky) that can be applied to wet hair and just left on. No blow drying, no ironing until I am ready to go out. I am currently using KMS California - Hot Press Spray, but when I go to wash my hair again the next day it is really course like hay.

Please help, I have asked dozens of hair dressers again and again and no one seems interested in knowing the products they sell.

Most hair straightening products are applied to damp or towel dried hair for best results. You can apply them to wet hair but unfortunately, wet hair lacks porosity because its already holding water. You hair simply can't absorb much product if your hair's wet.

You'll have good luck with both straightening creams and smoothing creams. Both types of products do about the same thing, which is to help eliminate frizzy hair by smoothing/straightening the hair shaft.

(Some examples are CHI Straight Guard Smoothing Styling Cream and John Frieda Runway Straight Smoothing Milk.)

For most of these products to work properly, hair should be styled/blow dried/ironed promptly. (You can leave them in your hair and style later but you'll need to dampen your hair a bit for the product to work correctly.)

I too, have curly hair/wavy hair and wear my hair straight. Its easy to straighten your hair when its damp with a blow dryer only.

To blow dry your hair straight, take these steps.

  • Start with damp hair.

  • Set your blow dryer on a medium setting.

  • Blow dry one section of your hair at a time, while holding the blow dryer above your hair with the nozzle pointed down.

  • Use a natural bristled brush and slowly brush each section of your hair while you're drying it.

If your hair reverts to curly later on, spritz the curly sections of your hair with water and blow dry it straight again.

You don't need an iron to have straight hair. Having hair straightening/smoothing products in your hair before you blow dry, will help hold your straight style longer.
