In a recent survey, one plan was clearly chosen as the best diet plan that people preferred over all the other ones. It's called Volumetrics and is based on volume. You can eat all the low density foods you want on the plan. Since most people like to eat, the plan is very popular. If given the choice, most people would choose to eat more, not less.
Unlike diets that are based on some kind of deprivation, the Volumetrics diet is different. Its based loosely on the fact that limiting your intake too severely won’t work long term. When you’re deprived of something, you end up hungry and unhappy and go back to eating the way you like.
That's probably the main reason why people ranked Volumetrics as the best diet plan. The approach allows people to find foods that they can eat lots of food and still lose weight.
The reason this plan works is because its focus is on satiety, which is the feeling of fullness. You'll feel full from the amount of foods you eat, not from of the number of calories in the foods. The key is to fill up on foods that aren't full of calories.
Volumetrics allows you to slim down by eating more, not less, than you do now.
What You Can Eat
The Volumetrics plan is based on a foods energy density. This concept is critical to the diet.
Energy density is the number of calories in a specified amount of food.
Fatty foods are very energy dense. They have a lot of calories packed into a small size. If you eat foods with high energy density, you gain calories and weight quickly.
Water, on the other hand, has an energy density of zero. When you consume foods with low energy density, you can eat more of them and lose calories and weight too.
Low-density foods include:
Non-starchy vegetables/fruits
Nonfat milk
Soup broths
Water
High-density foods include:
Crackers
Chips
Cookies, Cake
Chocolate/Candies
Nuts
Butter
Oils
Volumetrics relies heavily on foods with a high water content. These are all foods we know already which are vegetables and fruits, which have 80% to 95% water content.
Foods that contain high water amounts fill you up without adding a lot of calories. Just drinking water isn't enough though. It will quench your thirst but not satisfy hunger pains.
Volumetrics books are full of recipes that include foods with a lot of water. There are recipes for soups, casseroles, stews, and fruit-based desserts. The recipes also use a lot of familiar substitutes to low-fat diet veterans, for example cutting oil, butter, eggs, cream, and opting for skim milk, egg whites, yogurt, and applesauce instead.
The program also suggests eating lots of foods with filling fiber, along with adequate portions of lean protein and some healthy fats from fish and other sources.
Energy dense foods like sweets, fats, and alcohol are still allowed. You just have to eat/drink them sparingly.
Other diets that came in 2nd and 3rd on the best diet plan survey were Jenny Craig and Slim Fast, in that order.
So is Volumetrics really the Best Diet Plan?
While the 'hook' of Volumetrics is clever, the best diet plan is essentially already on the weight loss tip pages of this website. Only I call it common sense!
The Volumetrics plan is exactly what I’ve already told you which is to eat a sensible diet lower in calories, lower in fat, with lots of vegetables and fruits on the side:o)
My other 'key to weight loss' that is absolutely critical in any weight loss plan, is that 'nothing in excess is good for you'. If you can live this way, you can lose all the weight you need to!
