Allergic Reaction to Dark Hair Dye?

by Valerie Mudrovich
(Riverside, CA)

I have dyed my hair all kinds of colors as a early as I was 15 years old, red, black, burgundy, blonde... You name it. Now I am 25 I've dyed my hair blonde non stop for a while.

About 3 years ago, I dyed my hair black and that was the last time I did cause I got 3rd degree burns all over my head. I didn't leave it on too long, it just started itching a lot... which I've noticed only from dark hair dye. Bleach doesn't bother me what so ever? So I'm not sure whats going on ? Is this an allergic reaction? I don't know what to avoid or how to dye my hair dark anymore? I haven't done it for 3 years cause I don't want to take the chance. I was wondering if you could help? Thank you so much!

Its really hard to say if you're having an allergic reaction to dark hair dye or not. It could be that your scalp was already tender from your coloring it blonde non stop.

To determine if it was an allergic reaction, you'll need to do a patch test.

Patch Test

Mix a small amount of the (dark) hair color with the same amount of developer. (peroxide) You'll need to check with the manufacturer's directions to make sure this is the right ratio to use. Most hair colors are mixed 1:1 but some are mixed 1:2.

Apply the mixture to a small area on the inside of your arm. Allow it to stay on your skin for at least 10 - 15 minutes. If the area does not get red or start burning, you have no allergies to the color.

If your skin does start burning or turning red, rinse the area immediately with cold water and do not use the color on your hair. You did have an allergic reaction to it and should not use it.
