Q) My African American dry hair is driving me nuts. My hair is a light brown color but it is so dry and breaking severely!
It use to be shoulder length now it is almost like a Halley Berry short style. What to do I have tried everything down to Aphogee Reconstructor with protein!!
Professional Hair Care Answer - Have you ever tried a Cholesterol treatment? These are great! I've used them in the past for hair that was what we call 'fried, dyed, and laid to the side'. You can buy it at Sally's or any Beauty Supply Store. Its very cheap and helps restore lost moisture.
Hair cholesterol is a thick cream. It used to be orange but is now cream colored and smells really great. It was specifically formulated for African American dry hair and damaged hair but I've used it many times on my Caucasion hair with great success. I love it.

Description:
Advanced formula Cholesterol is for hair that is extremely dull, dry or damaged because of over processing, over bleaching or any other natural or chemical mistreatment. It contains Choleplex, our exclusive blending of Cholesterol with two special emollients that have proven to be effective in strengthening, deep conditioning and rejuvenating troubled hair. Also enriched with natural Aloe Vera Gel and Keratin protein to soften and moisturize hair. Super Cholesterol helps prevent breakage, brittleness and split-ends and makes hair much more manageable and responsive.
Directions
Shampoo hair and towel dry. Apply Cholesterol Cream generously to hair and scalp, making sure hair is well covered. Add a few drops of warm water and massage gently into a creamy lather. May be used with or without a heating cap. (If you don't have a heat cap, go out into the sun for a few minutes at least.) Keep on for 8 to 10 minutes, allowing conditioner to penetrate. Rinse thoroughly with warm water until all cream is washed away, then set or style as usual.

OK, you'll want a deep treatment, and those are general directions. The way I was taught to use it in Cosmetology school, was to massage the cholesterol into your african american dry hair AND scalp for at least 20 minutes, then use a thermal heat cap for at least another 20 minutes. If you don't have a heat cap, just use a regular cap and go sit in the sun or just 'stay warm' bundled up with some blankets. You can even leave it in your hair overnight. It won't hurt it. Really massage your entire scalp when you use Cholesterol. Massage will help stimulate your hair follicles and improve circulation!
Do NOT style as usual. Your hair will be very flat and limp for a few days. Just let it rest. You can do this once or twice a month if you like.
Cholesterol has deep conditioners in it with a bit of protein. It is mainly fat based and this will soothe your hair. Please don't overuse proteins, like Aphogee. They can damage your hair and make it dry and brittle if you use them too often! This is exactly what I suspect happened to your hair. You might also use hask placenta products. Hask placenta works wonders for African American hair types, anyone with damaged hair, or even people who have healthy hair but just want to improve shine and silkiness!
Your hair should improve dramatically. A few other questions to ask yourself. Are you getting enough vitamin supplements? Are you getting enough hair vitamins like E, C, B, D, Calcium, and Biotin? Is anything else going on with you physically or mentally?
I also researched the Aphogee product. There was one comment that said that Aphogee was a very POTENT product and if you over used it, it would 'take your hair right out of your head if you use too much'.
