Acne breakouts affect 25% of all adult men and 50% of adult women. Of those, about one third of adults affected with facial acne also have acne somewhere on their body. In fact, most adults suffer from acne problems at some time during their life.
Menopause and childbirth change hormones in a woman’s body and cause some people to break out unexpectedly. People can develop unpleasant acne or have an acne recurrence anytime.
Today’s Dermatologists report that there are more people with adult acne now than in previous decades. There appears to be an increase in post adolescent acne breakouts and lasts longer. Adult acne can affect you in the same way it affects teenagers. Depression and anxiety are typical negative responses to having acne as an adult.
One in five women between the ages of 25 and 40 suffer from adult acne. Although the causes of adult acne are unknown, possible causes include hormones, cosmetics, stress, and an increase of resistant bacteria. Women in particular often experience premenstrual flare-ups around their mouth. Every woman (and man) needs help every now and then to prevent acne breakouts and clear them up as fast as possible.
How to Prevent and Treat Acne Breakouts
Wash your face twice a day (no more) with warm water and a mild soap made for acne breakouts. My favorite facial soap is neutrogena facial bar. Because it’s a bar soap, it will last much longer than pump style cleansers. It’s also transparent so it’s evident that there are no hidden ingredients that will harm your skin. It’s clean and fresh and makes your skin feel great. Gently massage your face with circular motions. Don't ever scrub your skin hard. Over washing and over scrubbing can cause your skin to become irritated.
Try not to pop pimples. Popping pimples can release infected material onto other parts of your skin, which leads to more swelling and redness, and sometimes even scarring. If you notice a pimple coming up before a big event, like the prom, graduation, marriage, etc., try steroid creams like 10% Cortisone. Cortisone and it's natural alternative, cardiospermum cream, thin your skin and helps dry up pimples faster. Don’t use too often though. Your face already has thinner skin than the rest of your body and you don’t want to thin it too much more than it already is.
If you do pop a pimple, apply hydrogen peroxide to the area to remove bacteria immediately. Allow it to foam and bubble on the area. Peroxide is long known for it’s ability to not only remove bacteria, but to also dry up whatever you apply it to. Keep using peroxide until the area starts to day out.
Green tea has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. For that reason, its as good at eliminating zits as benzoyl peroxide. Simply make a hot cup of green tea and allow it to seep for an hour or so. Once it's cool, it can be applied directly to problem areas with a cotton ball. Continue using it until your acne disappears.
Avoid touching your face with your fingers or leaning your face up against objects that collect sebum and skin residue like your telephone. If you use your phone a lot, clean it often with rubbing alcohol when it’s turned off. Allow it to dry completely before powering it back up. Touching your face can spread bacteria from your hands to your face. Bacteria can cause your pores to become more inflamed and irritated.
To keep bacteria from forming, wash your hands or apply antibacterial gel to your hands before applying anything to your face, such as treatment creams or makeup.
If you wear glasses or sunglasses, make sure you clean them frequently to keep oils from transferring and clogging the pores around your eyes and nose.
If you get acne on any part of your body like your back, try not to wear tight clothes, which don't allow your skin to breathe and may cause irritation. You also might want to stay away from anything you wear on your head like headbands and caps, which can transfer bacteria and oils too.
Remove makeup before you go to bed at night. This is one point I can’t stress enough. Many women think that one night of not taking makeup off won’t hurt, however if you’ve got acne problems, you must make a ritual of it every time you wear makeup.
Give your skin a break every now and again. If you’re going to be home for the day, don’t wear makeup.
Don’t overdo night creams. Night creams are heavier than daily moisturizers and can clog pores if worn too often. Studies show, that when you apply night cream every night, your skin gets used to the oils you supply it. Given enough time, your skin may cut back on oil production because of using them too often.
Remember to feel blessed every now and again if you have oily skin. People with oily skin look younger longer than people with dry skin.
Use clay masks every other week to deep clean your pores. Acne may form right after you use one since masks pull the impurities out of the deep layers in your skin.
Use Benzoyl Peroxide. It has been clinically proven to stop acne over time. If one brand doesn't work for you, try another brand.
Use toners. Facial toners are a must have for anyone suffering from regular acne, especially if you have oily skin. I've used Neutrogena Pore Refining Toner for years and had great success with it. It really deep cleans pores and still leaves your skin glowing. For oily skin, the higher the salicylic acid, the better! If you find your skin is drying out, change your toner to one with less percentage salicylic acid.
When you buy makeup, make sure you choose brands that say 'noncomedogenic' or 'nonacnegenic' on the label. Throw away old makeup that smells or looks different from when you first bought it.
Keep your hair clean and out of your face to prevent additional dirts and oils from transferring and clogging your pores. This becomes especially important during the summer months.
Use sunblocks that protect your skin from the sun. It may seem like a tan masks your acne breakouts, but it's only temporary. A tan can cause your body to produce extra sebum which may make acne worse, not improve it. Tanning without a sunscreen damages your skin and may contribute to wrinkles and increase your risk of skin cancer.
Use Alpha Hydroxy lotions at night before bed. An old standard but a 'dependable one' is Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion but there are certainly many others available. AHA's slough dead skin cell buildup from your skin and keep your skin cells renewing themselves. They are a marvel at keeping your skin new and fresh and help prevent acne breakouts.
There are several causes of adult acne, of which are stress, cosmetics, and hormones. Stress causes your oil glands to speed up production. Old cosmetics can add bacteria to your pores and cause acne breakouts. Hormone fluctuations may also cause your sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum.
Use water based daily moisturizers like Olay All Day Complete if you have normal to oily skin. Water should be the first ingredient on the label. Cream based lotions and moisturizers add oil to your face and may contribute to acne breakouts. Cream moisturizers are specifically made for dry skin types.
Whatever you do, don't sweat the small stuff. If you have an occasional breakout, roll with it and do what you can to stop the spread of bacteria. If your acne breakouts don't clear up on their own, its best to seek a Dermatologist's care. There may be some other underlying cause that's causing you to have acne problems.
